How does the far infrared (FIR) technology work to heat the body?
Tired of using hot water bottles that lose heat quickly, or electric blankets that can be uncomfortable and dry out your skin? Discover the revolutionary power of far infrared (FIR) technology with Feel the Warmth.
Unlike traditional heat sources that only warm the surface of your skin, FIR radiation penetrates up to 2 inches below the skin, reaching deep into the tissue. This deep penetration provides targeted relief for pain and discomfort, promotes circulation, and accelerates healing.
We asked the expert: Dr. Adrian Smales BEng(Hons), MBA, PhD, a Research Fellow in Healthcare Informatics, to explain more about it. Simply check out the Health Benefits section of the website to watch a short video and learn more about FIR technology!
What are the care instructions for the Super Kidney Warmer, Kidney Heat Belt, and Heat Pad?
The fabrics are 100% Polyester. We recommend Hand Wash Only and drip dry. Do NOT tumble dry. Please remove the battery before washing, and never exceed 5v.
How long will the 10,000mAh Powerbank last?
- Up to 10 hours with the Infrared Kidney Heat Belt
- Up to 8 hours with the Infrared Super Kidney Warmer
- Up to 6 hours with the Infrared Heat Pad
Can gentle heat lower everyday anxiety and stress?
In 2025, Feel the Warmth worked with Dr Adrian Smales, PhD, MBA, BEng(Hons) to run an 8-week pilot where everyone used a far-infrared (FIR) heat belt showed clear drops in anxiety and stress and better sleep. The scale of improvement was big enough that most people would notice the change in everyday life – think fewer “on edge” moments, more calm, and an easier time winding down at night. While this was an early-stage study (no separate control group), Dr Adrian Smales concluded that the signals are consistent and encouraging. Read the results in full!
Which one is better, wired heat pads or a far infrared (FIR) heating pad?
The “regular” heating pad on the market uses thin, hot metal wires or carbon fibre wires to create heat. This type of heat penetrates a mere 2-3 mm and basically only warms your skin (and in many cases burns it). The heat never reaches deep into your muscles, tissues or organs. And, they are expensive to run, are often poorly designed, and can be made of low quality materials. Traditional heating pads are, in our opinion, inefficient, dangerous and unreliable.
On the other hand, a far infrared heating pad from Feel the Warmth CIC uses a high-performance Polymeric rubber to emit infrared rays, which penetrate much deeper into your body (5 cm) – all the way to your muscles, nerves and bones. There are no wires to worry about.
Far infrared technology is, simply, light.
FIR rays can’t burn you and are 100% safe for all living things. Far infrared heating pads do not emit UV radiation at all.
How much do far infrared products cost to run?
Each product from Feel the Warmth CIC can be run from a mobile phone charger or a 5v powerbank for on the move.
Running costs are a fraction of electric wired heat pads – and will provide over 200 hours of safe penetrating heat for around 50 pence per month.
Why doesn’t the product feel hot when I touch it?
The Far Infrared Super Kidney Warmer, Kidney Heat Belt and Heating Pad may not feel hot to the touch. This is normal, as the FIR rays work beneath the surface to deliver soothing, therapeutic warmth once absorbed by the body. The deep-penetrating FIR heat rays work beneath the skin’s surface to gently warm parts of your body, to deliver soothing, therapeutic warmth once absorbed by the body.

Can the products be used safely for vulnerable people who may have Alzheimer’s or Dementia?
Absolutely – that was the point of starting Feel the Warmth in the first place! The Heat Pad can be put on a timer by a carer to deliver warmth when a person needs it most. The Super Kidney Warmer and Kidney Heat Belt can be wrapped around a person’s body and worn all day with a power bank (available as a separate purchase), so even if someone forgot to turn on their heat, they would be warm. All products cost as little as 50 pence per month for regular use, and are an energy-efficient way to heat the person, not the room.
Your purchase supports our mission to reduce the amount of unnecessary deaths occurring from cold-related illnesses, due to a mixture of high fuel costs, Scottish winters, poor housing conditions, Dementia and rough sleeping.
Do the heating products help with fuel poverty?
In October 2025, the Scottish Government estimated that approximately 33% (830,000) of Scottish households are in fuel poverty, with 17% (420,000) experiencing extreme fuel poverty, driven by high energy prices and low incomes. Feel the Warmth CIC manufactures products that are much cheaper to run than radiators, costing as little as 50 pence per month for regular use - that’s around £6 per year.
The Super Kidney Warmer, Kidney Heat Belt and Heating Pad are innovative and are designed as an energy-efficient solution to fuel poverty - to heat the person, not the room. Feel the Warmth CIC provides hundreds of products to charities per year to help people vulnerable people, unhoused people, and those experiencing fuel poverty – and that’s what your purchase supports.
How do I measure my torso?
Getting the right fit starts with one simple measurement. Here’s how to do it:
-
Find a soft measuring tape – the kind used for sewing. If you don’t have one, a piece of string and a ruler will do.
-
Stand up straight and relax your arms at your sides.
-
Find your natural waist – this is the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above your belly button.
-
Keep the tape level – make sure it sits flat and even all the way around, not twisted or pulled tight.
-
Breathe normally – don’t hold your breath or pull in your stomach.
-
Take the reading – note the number where the tape meets itself. This is your measurement in inches or centimetres.
If you’re between sizes, we recommend sizing up for the most comfortable fit.
